Copernicus Marine National Collaboration
Advanced satellite monitoring for sustainable coastal management. We provide high-resolution tracking of shoreline changes and erosion risk assessment.
The main objective of Limen360 is to improve the understanding of the dynamic state of the Italian coastline, particularly in highly occupied bathing zones with permanent or temporary infrastructure which are directly affected by the sand surface availability.
This will be achieved by deploying the Limen360 platform service, accessible via any internet browser and without any installation required. The proposed service is to be used both by EU and Italian coastal policymakers, administrations and private entities/citizens in order to be informed about the risk of erosion and sand movement in the highly occupied bathing areas of their interest.
When fully operational, the Limen360 service will provide continuous, high-resolution tracking of shoreline changes and the NCVI mapping, enabling authorities to detect early signs of erosion and sand displacement and classifying different sections of the coastline according to their erosion risk.
Copernicus is the European Union's Earth Observation Flagship Programme, looking at our planet and its environment for the ultimate benefit of all European citizens. It offers information services based on satellite Earth Observation, in situ (non-space) data and numerical models. The Programme is coordinated and managed by the European Commission in partnership with Member States, ESA, EUMETSAT, ECMWF, EEA, Mercator Ocean International, and other EU Agencies.
The Copernicus Marine Service is the marine component of the European Union's Copernicus Programme. It provides free, open-access, and science-based information on the state of the Ocean at both global and regional scales. Funded by the European Commission and implemented by Mercator Ocean International, the service supports EU policies and International legal commitments related to Ocean Governance, marine protection, climate change monitoring, pollution tracking, maritime safety, and sustainable use of marine resources.
By developing a novel Coastal Vulnerability Index (NCVI), building upon existing scientific literature, the project will offer a standardized metric to assess erosion risks at a fine spatial scale. The development and implementation of the NCVI will be done from the fusion of Earth Observation Satellite data and Copernicus Marine Service (CMS) data. The final product will provide a normalized risk index (0-1) with a resolution of 10 meters along the coastline of interest.
The service will support EU, national, local, and regional administrations, providing them with the insights required for accurate policy-making, land use planning, and beach maintenance efforts. The system will offer a standardized coastal vulnerability index, ensuring objective and comparable risk assessments across a wide area of interest.
By monitoring shoreline changes over time, the service will help balance economic activities (such as tourism) with ecological sustainability, ensuring that coastal areas remain safe and accessible. The project will empower policymakers, citizens, and businesses with real-time insights on coastal risks.
The results will be published through the creation of the Limen360 platform. The unified final product will provide a normalized risk index (0-1) with a resolution of 10 meters along the coastline of interest. This value will offer an informative yet concise synthesis of the state of each section of the coast and can be used, consequently, to evaluate specific sections or aggregate portions of the coastline for the purposes of policy development, maintenance, land use planning, or to guide private investments, among other areas of application.
Limen360 fuses Earth Observation Satellite data with Copernicus Marine Service (CMS) data. By applying advanced AI and data mining algorithms, we provide continuous, high-resolution tracking of shoreline changes.
Our Novel Coastal Vulnerability Index provides a normalized risk score for every 10 meters of coastline. This allows for precise evaluation of specific sections to guide private investment and public policy.
